The reasoning is very simple.
The Protestants are viewed as being invaders, as most of these are descended from people brought over to the Ulster Plantation, the IRA have drawn parallels between this and the Israelis occupying land that is not theirs.
Conversely, NI Protestants worship Jews BECAUSE they steal land from others, you can see Isreali flags hung from some homes in Derry, for example.

By the mid-late 1700s, the British government were making heavy conceessions to Irish patriots and in the 1790s a storm was the only thing that stopped you losing it all to the frogs.
