It was taken by force. The anti aircraft systems created a buffer zone for 12 km after the suez canal. Enabling egyptian forces to advance without getting bombarded by American airforces. And that's what happened. The buffer zone was take by force and so was the suez canal. The soviets forced Sadat to advance because Israel decided to fight Syria at the Golan and Egyptian forces continued after the buffer zone. Then the American military notified israelis about a gap zone enabling them to advance past the suez canal. The Israeli did advance and the Egyptian forces resent other troops from Sinai to go after that aggression. The Americans realized that the war was escalating very fast so the un called for a ceasefire. When that happened the israelis took that opportunity to rush very fast to get as near Cairo with a few troops in order to mask the amount of loss they suffered. The reality is. Egypt got the Sinai back and the American military couldn't do anything to save you.
