I’m not sure this is actually true.
They were big players in the trade, and owned at higher rates than the general population. But this was probably because they were wealthier than the general population.
They typically weren’t involved in agriculture, so I doubt they owned 95% of slaves. I could be wrong.

I know a guy who told me that because of slavery, he was surprised that blacks weren't slaughtering whites in the street.
