It's more than that. It's different historic regional powers fighting over control of territory. It's worth noting that region (Warsaw to Moscow) is geographically indefensible from a traditional military point of view since there are no rugged mountains or huge bodies of water between the different relevant major centers of power (city states). In fact, from the Beauce region of France all the way to Moscow, you have a region of the European continent going from Paris to Moscow that is easy to traverse by any military because it's a plain. So, logically different powers (but especially Russia) sought extensive politically fabricated buffer zones between one another. Slavs were just the people who were there. But the German Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austro Hungarian Empire, and the Russian Empire have all historically fought for control of buffer zones. Political alliances with different peoples were often based on religious affiliation (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, etc.)
