I've always been very anti social but I was at my worst around 2001. Parents had just got divorced, I was 12 my bro was 9, best part of my day was hitting people as hard as I could at football practice. I had just left first block English class for social studies at 8:30 and we watched the entire thing unfold on CNN for the next hour. My friends and I thought it was cool, we wanted war, death, and destruction because we were violent kids that set fires, lit off m80s and followed kids home from school if we had a problem. One year later me and the boys were in Washington DC on our class trip and within an hour of getting there the DC sniper was killing random people at had stations. We spent the next 3 days watching CNN in our hotel rooms and cheering him on because or itinerary had been cancelled and we went into lockdown. Ahhh, the good ol days...

All you have to ask is "cui bono?" What does the US gain from a $4 Trillion dollar war of attrition in the Middle east? Not much. Mild leverage against international oil and gas pipelines that would make US oil unable to compete in these markets.
