the nazi advancement had surrounded british and allied troops and the only logical thing to do was to move them back over the channel to regroup, rearm and organise defence measures and future offensives.

it was an amazing effort. 340,000 troops were moved back over the channel. better to do that than be pushing into the channel from a wall of german shelling

no, infantry had fallen behind the panzer units and they were halted to allow them to regroup together. by this time the british discovered the germans planned advancement to dunkirk and sent in reforcements in northern france to hold them back for a few days so they could evacuate the beach.
