All of "Indian" culture did not come from Indians. It came from previous visitors and Indians have subsequently changed much of it and shitted it all up. Fucking Tamil used to be Sanskrit at its core and they couldn't even manage keeping that together.

The story of Mahabharata starts with a dog licking the sacrificial offerings of ghee. A soldiers beats the dog to get him away from the sacrificial fire. The dog runs to his mom who's the goddess from who dogs were created. The goddess comes to the king's sacrifice and blames him for beating her puppy even though he didn't do anything. For that the goddess curses the king. That set off a motion of events that lead to the great war.
In the middle of the story they talk about dogs always having to be present during the reading and chanting of mantras. Dogs are the first to hear the blessings the sages recite.
At the end of the story. The king is climbing the Himalayas. All his brothers and wife who are climbing with him die. But a dog that followed him from the foot of the mountain makes it to the peak of mount Everest with him. The chariot of the God of Thunder Indra comes to pick him up and take him to heaven. He washes himself in heavenly waters to disinfect his mortal body. So he asks the guy driving the ship to also bathe the dog in the heavenly water. The captain of the ship refuses and says is only for humans. But the king won't get on the ship and go to heaven without the dog because the dog needs his protection. Finally the captain of the heavenly ship agrees and the dog also makes it to heaven.
