I choose the AR. It's lighter and slightly more compact, and I like the grip a tiny bit better. Plus that one comes with a free optic I can sell to some retard and use the cash for something actually useful.

AK = Forged steel, nearly impossible to break, if its bent whack it with a hammer.
Integral cleaning rod & cleaning kit. Cleaning kit is also toolkit and fits in buttstock. Polymer magazines durable and steel reinforced. Needs little lube, has only 5 parts, easy to break down and reassemble. Reliable, rarely fails, ever. easy to clear out stuck shell

AR = Aluminum, bend it and the rifle is done for good. Gas system fouls the gun on the first shot, lots of little parts, needs external cleaning kit. Magazines are aluminum and easy to damage. 5.56 round is not tapered, jams easy, gets really hot fast. Stuck shell difficult to remove

This. Tolerances in modern AR's are so tight they're more reliable than AK's. Within 150 yards the 5.56 does more damage than a 7.62. Outside of that 150 yards the 5.56 is far more accurate and you can follow up with shots a lot quicker. Also mounting sights on the AK's dustcover means dogshit accuracy. AR's are superior in everyway. It's also America's gun so fuck anyone who disagrees.

That's not why the original M16A1s were prone to failure (at least not the primary reason). The real reason was that a bunch of retarded fudds in the army top brass hated the idea of a service rifle that wasn't made of wood and steel, so they made some outrageous, impossible demands of the rifle after it had already been adopted. They wanted 3200+ fps, which was impossible with the IMR 544 powder that wad used during all the trials. The only way to get those velocities was to use old WW2 era ball powder, which burned really dirty and fouled up the direct impingment system of the M16. That, conbined with some army bean counter deciding to save money by not issuing cleaning kits to soldiers, meant that troops had no way of cleaning their fouled chambers.

i should add, i saw a video once of a dude shooting and AR and an AK non stop to see which one went longer. The AK bent a little from the heat but kept going. Although the AK was more spray and pray while the AR was slightly more accurate (if you know how to shoot)

Rebuttal: The 5.45x39 is what Russia uses, its a much better cartridge and better than 5.56. AK's do not use optics on the dust cover, they use a side-mounted system that locks and doesn't wiggle at all. The Russian muzzle brake is vastly superior and the kick from the AK-74 is minuscule, meaning follow-up shots are very easy.

Ahh the eternal AK vs AR debate. First off there are good and shitty versions of both on the market. I own multiple of both and I love them both. Both good platforms you really can't go wrong with. My favorite to shoot is the AR, it's buttery smooth and I can put them in a tight group every time. But if it was the apocalypse and I could only grab ONE? Yeah, it's my Zastava AK.
