I don't think it was invented for that reason, no. The term has been around since at least the 40s and, prior to about 2017-18, was a relatively unknown and well used term. It's just the latest psychological term that has blown up and rendered next to meaningless through incorrect and over usage. no clue (((who))) could be behind it.

No. Gaslighting is real, I grew up with a mother that constantly did it, little things, big things. She constantly tried to convince me I was misremembering things and was crazy.
