I never understood this. If you google whether pit bulls are more dangerous than other breeds then almost all articles you find are shilling this breed as hard as possible and emphasizing a kind of "it's not the breed, it's the owner" message. Yet, when you look at the data, these dogs are so disproportionately represented in statistics covering fatal bites, that there is no way you could attribute that to "bad owners". I have also heard anecdotes from a friend who has had experience with the breed in the past and he confirmed that they are especially unpredictable.
It seems to me that these people want to neglect the impact of genetics or temperament on behavior quite the same way as people make excuses for crime statistics of Afro Americans. For some reason they like to take a full nurture stance in this case. I find it all very odd.

Partially it's people being stupid. The other part is the American Pit Bull Terrier of today is not the Pit Bull most people remember. As originally bred, the dog was trained to bait bulls, then became a "farm dog" before it was further domesticated and became a popular pet breed because it was so good around children. Shows such as "The Little Rascals" highlighted the breed because it was intelligent, loyal, well behaved and great around kids.
Then certain groups started to want to own them due to it's strong, muscular appearance and wanted the biggest, baddest of the breed. So you started to see a change. They were being bred for musculature, aggression and intimidation. Where as previously the gentle natured pups were preferred, now they wanted the most aggressive of the litter. "Muh Dick" because "Muh Dog" and the breed became deadly. Yes, you can still find a well-raised, docile Pit Bull if the breeder is trying to breed/train for those traits, but those aren't the norm anymore.
