He did good things though and got me through a year of college.

There's 2 ways I can think of. Withdrawal from Benzos can cause long ass and potentially deadly seizures, which could damage the brain if untreated.
Another is the actual induced coma fucking up his brain.

Personally, listening to his lectures and his book had really only resulted in one thing for me...
I lost my apathy and nihilism towards life in general and I gained an appreciation for metaphor and the importance of mythological stories in building cultures, philosophies, and ideals.

While I still remain an atheist..or perhaps agnostic..I have realized that most atheism, or at least the very loud atheism, is not about not having a belief in gods due to no evidence but it's about being counter-culture and it may be a result of losing the ability, intentionally or otherwise, to actually engage in metaphor and myth.
The American atheists will take the christian bible every bit as seriously as the fundamentalists they complain about and will refuse the idea of stories existing perhaps to provide moral lessons through metaphors....but they'll readily see it in their star wars and marvel movies.

I've recently started reading the old greek myths again. This time actually studying them. The greeks were the primordial soup of western culture and so perhaps absorbing their myths, wisdom, and values makes the most sense. I've already spent early years studying eastern culture and philosophy and I just don't think it's the right answer.

when you spend your life mentally ordering arguments and playing them out internally to conclusion, if you have any capabilities at all you will naturally gravitate towards what the truth of a matter is, as once you have your proof and facts based in reality theres no longer any inner turmoil required, you get to move on to something else.
thats no great insight, everyone knows theres beauty and finesse in simplicity, no mental gymnastics are required to circumnavigate the truth of a matter.

and how he ended up in the state he is in right now is because on the biggest question at play regarding the planets future, that being race and the JQ, he has been positioning himself from the start at what he considers the very kosher dismissive center ground that is in reality counter to the simplicity and finesse of the matters truth, which stops him from finding any peace.
