There is a very low general standard. Beyonce is the only one in the best selling list to posess any high level of technique. It used to be that skilled vocalists were common in popular music, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston etc. Many bands had skilled lead singers - Axel Rose had a 5 octave range, Bruce Dickinson had a powerful bel canto style. The average was much much higher.
After Beyonce then Adele would be number 2 for actual skill, and she is absolutely mediocre.
