Pretty sure this is an evolutionary survival mechanism. Suppose that most of the men in a village have died in battle, and now Chad the war hero has taken two wives. Normally there would be jealousy and resentment and maybe even baby-smothering. But what if the two wives also diddled each other? Even if they're both primarily attracted to men, their willingness to also engage in sexual behavior with each other will ease social tensions.
