I love them, but I shouldn't. My American dad married a Polish woman in the 70's and I think it was just a marriage of convenience. They fought and fought and when he finally died of a heart attack, she took everything.

With that said, I spent some time in Poland and loved it. It was beautiful and simple. I loved all the trains everywhere. People were friendly. Tons of castles and woods. This was in the 70s so the Soviet influence was still strong, such as only having one gas station per city and having to take the harvest to a co-op.

I worked on a farm for a few weeks. It was the farm of my new step mothers uncle and the town was fairly primitive. They didn't have electricity 24 hours per day. I got to slop the pigs, milk the cows, harvest grains, etc. It was fun. The milk had to be lowered in stainless steel casks into a well to keep them cool since they didn't have constantly electricity and we actually used a horse drawn wagon to take the grain to the Co op. Loved it.

When I arrived in that town, a wonderful little girl, maybe 12, came to the house to ask 'is this the place where the American boy is staying?" and she gave me a basket of "Schleefki". I'm spelling it phonetically, not sure how it's spelled in Polish.

I found it funny that when I would walk around in Boston, I'd see historical monuments that were build in the 1700's. Maybe something in the late 1600's. But when in Krakow, I entered a church that was build in the 800's (and had a pub in the basement). Poland has a much older history.

I changed my American dollars in the 'black market' and got $100 Zlote per dollar instead of 33. So I made out there to.

I loved it.

Later, when I learned more about it I learned to like it more. I'm glad they have gone in the direction they've gone politically. They seem to be doing well now and bucking the trends that the rest of Europe is embracing.

Everytime I see a Pole here in the states, they seem like hardworking, honest, and straightforward dudes.
And while I've never been to your country, I've heard it's better there then in most of Europe.
