There is a real spike in deaths these past couple of months partly because the virus is real and it is true that it tends to spread quickly because few people are immune.

We are also coming out of a very mild flu season so there quite a large number of vulnerable people still living who would have otherwise died of flu. With COVID-19 hitting now it is claiming the lives of these people who would have died of the flu if the flu season were more severe.

Antibody tests are now starting to be released which show that COVID-19 has about the same lethality as a bad flu season (0.05 to 0.2%). So what's happening now is kindof as though we just had the flu hit later this year.

The image (and related article in NYT) refers to excess deaths beyond those reported as coronavirus-caused deaths. Until seeing this I thought , like most of you, that corona deaths were being overreported due to attributing almost any deaths to corona, but if numbers are indeed increasing this much in comparison with previous years then people are indeed dying of something new.

Furthermore, some of this spike in deaths is coming from the lockdowm measures themselves.

This week deaths from all respiratory illnesses (COVID-19 is primarily a respiratory illnesses and if you die from it it will probably have been from pneumonia) are actually down in England even though death rate continues to climb. Noone has a definite explanation for this right now because the statistics haven't all come out yet but watch for deaths from things like suicides and overdoses to spike. In addition since people are locked up in their homes, stressed and confused and with hospitals cancelling 'elective' services, watch for deaths in all manner of diseases to spike.

Note: I prefer to watch all deaths due to respiratory illnesses because they tend to be "generous" when counting COVID-19 deaths even though some of these deaths will have been due to non-COVID-19 related illnesses. If you look at the "official" COVID-19 numbers, however, they also do not account for the entire spike above the average (only about half of the spike or less).
