they didn't use zinc, but that wasn't the biggest problem, 66% of the population has adequate zinc consumption.
The major problem is the cocktail cure works by preventing the virus from replicating too much. If the virus is already in big numbers all through your body, other treatments need to be used such as IL-6 inhibitors (?). the toxicity of HCQ at that point is actually worse than not using it at all.

This study was funded by (((Gilead Science))) who is selling the competition to generic Plaquenil and Z-pak, but at 100x the cost.

The problem with Hydroxychloroquine is that you need very high concentrations and you need to administer it in a stage where you can not yet tell whether a patient is going to get better on his own, potentially putting him in a worse state from the medicine. Remdesivir seems to do the job more reliably.

There are quite a few other substances in the race though. Look into Camostat Mesylate and Niclosamide.
