Security at a Tyson pork plant here, everything has been business as usual until today. No harvest (hog killing) today or tomorrow but they are still running the cut floors, Friday will most likely be a full shut down. I'll still have work but chances are I'll be going from 40 hours down to 20 hours a week. Trucks are still being sent out and we have a few weeks of product frozen (unlike other tysons we have a dedicated freezer building across the street) but I'm actually pretty concerned now. Glad I saved half of my trump bux otherwise I would be worried about making bills.

I imagine if plants stay closed for more than a few days then yes, most meat prices will increase. I honestly have no idea why we're even shutting down, we have had 0 cases and we just did a massive decontamination on Monday. This reeks of price fixing.

Prices are not allowed to be increased dramatically for the consumer. That would be price gauging. Meanwhile the industry prices are skyrocketing.

So processing plants are closing down because they can no longer make money, and store shelves go empty.

I work very closely with the people who deliver our hogs. There is no disease causing this, it's literally the plants shutting down. I've worked here for 5 years now and they didnt even shut down when we had a massive recall of contaminated meat. People who have been st this plant for 20+ years are telling me this is the first time they have fully shut down. From what I've been told it's only supposed to be two days because Tyson loves their money but if USDA refuses to allow them to open again it could be a month of being shut down. I know the first thing I'm doing when I get off today is getting bulk grains and beans, never was a huge fan of pork anyway.
