They treat French the way Muslims treat Arabic: it's the language of God and if it isn't expressed properly in their own language, it doesn't feel "correct", so even if they can speak English, they always feel like their thoughts aren't being conveyed clearly enough. It's not uncommon for them to text you in English and then type the same thing in French to make certain you know what they mean.
