I don't have kids but I got beat over the littlest shit growing up. It just made me resent my parents and I'd rather avoid that if I do have children.

Idk if it's the spanking itself, but I sincerely believe millennial, zoomer, and some young genX parents are not disciplining kids properly, so we see a slow rise of younger kids throwing almost infantile fits over dumb shit when they're beyond their diaper and pullup years.

Call me a boomer, but there's definitely been a change from when I grew up in regards to this issue, and I didn't raise my kids to be crybabies in those years. Too many times I've seen some parent(s) walking around in public with a child throwing a fit over dumb shit beyond what their age would suggest, not doing anything about it or very little.

I spank my kids. I always warn them that if they keep up a certain un acceptable behavior they'll get a spanking as well as explaining why that behavior is unacceptable. then, if I need to spank them, I explain to them again why they are getting spanked. I never yell at them before hand and I tell them I take no joy from it but that it is a necessity from them to understand that there are physical consequences for their bad behavior.

I occasionally spank my kids if they fuck up really bad. Sometimes I'll flick my son in the side of the head or ear if he mouths off to me. But beat? Never. One of the ways I piss my mom off now is by doing everything as a parent better than she did.

There's spanking, and there's beating. Most of the time, I talk to my kids like they're adults, so they can understand what they did wrong, but the youngest still needs a pat on the butt sometimes, because he's too young to understand anything other than "if I do X, Y happens".

I think spanking them too early is a problem too, a double digit percentage of parents admit to spanking their kids well before their first birthday. With kids, I've always thought that, before they understand, mentally, why they should stop a specific behaviour, it's fine to use a proportionate physical punishment.
Once you can reason and talk with a kid, beatings are just a tap out. If your kid starts showing shitty behaviors, if you act soon enough and in a reasonable matter, it shouldn't escalate to a full on smackdown show in your living room.
Out of all the people that i know, the most troubled ones always had in common that they actively had a fight with one of their parents. One day it became simply too much to handle and they defended themselves from that physical punishment. That's the point of no return I believe.

I got my face slapped and spanked and had a couple near death beatings when I was a kid. I'm a father of 3 and my eldest is 9 years old. I've never hit my kids. I look at their faces and all I can feel is overwhelming joy and love. There are other ways to punish children than hitting. I'm a veteran of the Iraq war and I was a grunt and I've done all sorts of twisted shit in my life...But I still can't imagine what kind of monster you'd have to be to hit your own children or someone you love.
