Russia in 1917 was at medieval levels of development. The vast majority of peple were agrarian peasants, illiterate, short-lived and with no rights whatsover. From the revolution onwards the Soviet economy grew enormously, far outstripping the growth rate of the western powers. People became educated, well-fed, industry burgeoned, people were rehoused from hovels to spacious, elegant, heated apartments ("commie-blocks"). The USSR became a military superpower and won the space race. All in the teeth of violent opposition from the western world which stifled Soviet growth as much as it could and kept us on the brink of nuclear war because the ruling class feared the success of communism. Same story in China - went from being the poorest nation on Earth fifty years ago (Chinese were literally poorer than sub-Saharan Africans) to being by some measures the worlds largest economy and the industrial powerhouse of the world.

Anything works with enough outside support. They got huge early factory support from Germany, as Germany was forbidden to manufacture quite a bit of stuff after WW1 and cut a deal with Russia to outsource and let Russia keep a percentage of the vehicles.
They also straight looted eastern Europe, which was about as advanced as western Europe before the USSR sacked it, and literally hauled factories away on trains. They only managed to beat Germany militarily by US lend-lease support, human wave tactics, and using the equipment Germany helped them make.
They essentially accomplished nothing after that point, the space race on both sides of the pond was done on the backs of stolen German scientists, and Russia still can't make a microchip worth selling to this day.
