It's not that complicated.
Keep in mind the male Chechen population was utterly decimated and there were countless civilian casualties.
But if you fight tooth and nail you can win against a much stronger force, especially if you defend an inhospitable and mountainous homeland.

Inflict enough casualties the attacker loses the will to fight.
