yeah the internet in general is kind of fucked now. When there was limited access to the internet (2000-2013ish), there was a "must be this tall to ride" bar and it resulted in a generally decent internet population. Combine this with a limited number of places to go (websites) made some pretty cool communities but it all changed with the FUCKING SMARTPHONE DUDE. I've thought about this a lot. Ever since the smartphone, normies and grandparents could pollute the userbase and increase the value of advertising which resulted in more websites popping up to take advantage. Which sounds good but it fractured the userbase so now the once generally decent and diverse internet population is fractured between twitter, facebook, reddit, Yas Forums, 8kun, youtube, tumblr, podcasts, tinder, discord, twitch etc. It's honestly pretty similar to what's happened to the west with globalisation and other factors. Pretty sure both the internet and the west are doomed but I'm still hopeful for the west at least.
