Would it not be possible to pump water far inland and fill lowlying regions to create lakes, salt flats, etc? Seems like there's lots of ways to do it, it will just be expensive

You might think trapping evaporation from going East would be a bad thing but most rainfall in the South East comes up from the North East or South West. An ocean in the centre mountain range in the middle of Australia would drop temperatures in the South East and make it wetter as a moister as a result of the lower temperatures and reduced heatwaves. The South East is actually incredibly mild most of the time (significantly cooler than the USA in Summer and warmer in winter compared to relative latitudes). You get some scorching heat waves which drag the average temperature up (even so, the avg is actually still quite low for latitude). These are caused by hot air pooling over the desert for thousands of kilometres and then heading east unimpeded

there was a CSIRO study into that in the late 90's I believe. It was shelved due to a lack of political will. From what I remember connecting Lake Eyre and other below seas level salt lakes to the sea via canal from the gulf of carpenteria would turn the desert into a Mediterranean paradise
