>The Israelites originally worshipped Yahweh alongside a variety of Canaanite gods and goddesses, including El, Asherah and Baa but in time El and Yahweh became conflated.
>A number of scholars have drawn the conclusion that infant sacrifice, whether to the underworld deity Molech or to Yahweh himself, was a part of Israelite/Judahite religion until the reforms of King Josiah in the late 7th century BCE. Prayer played little role in official worship.
>Asherah, formerly the wife of El, was worshipped as Yahweh's consort or mother; potsherds discovered at Khirbet el-Kôm and Kuntillet Ajrûd make reference to "Yahweh and his Asherah", and various biblical passages indicate that her statues were kept in his temples.
>The worship of Yahweh alone began at the earliest in the 9th century BCE, but even then it remained the concern of a small party before gaining ascendancy in the Babylonian exile and early post-exilic period. The early supporters of this faction did not believe Yahweh was the only god in existence, but instead believed he was the only god the people of Israel should worship.
>Tacitus, John the Lydian, and Cornelius Labeo all identify Yahweh with the Greek god Dionysus. Jews themselves frequently used symbols that were also associated with Dionysus such as kylixes, amphorae, leaves of ivy, and clusters of grapes
How do Christians rationalise the fact that Yahweh was originally just another obscure god whose pantheon role, powers and dominion developed over time like any other man-made religion?

Yes, interesting indeed, I've assumed this for at least ten years. >How do Christians rationalise? By having faith. The historical development or trajectory of Jewish monotheism is irrelevant to this albeit interesting.

Are you saying this as a Christian? How does Jesus' affirmation of the Old Testament stories of Yahweh as the singular all-powerful God, and his claim to BE Yahweh, stand up to scrutiny, given that Yahweh was originally a subordinate storm god with a wife worshiped among many others in a relatively obscure pantheon, which only became a predominant figure due to the circumstances of history?

To me the canonical OT Yahweh (and all other tenets of faith) exist as ideals and highest truths in the (platonic) realm of ideas. Historical developments such as Yahweh evolving from part of a pantheon to a monotheistic enitity in the late bronze or early iron age are reserved for the material world. We can still learn higher truths by studying the material world.
I'm a Christian (maybe a somewhat heretical one in the eyes of some other Christians) but also a historian.

I really dont understand Judiasm.
Like seriously God is apparently a racist who happened to chose your desert dwelling tribe, and requires that you have weird hair and tassels to get into heaven.

>How do Christians rationalise the fact that Yahweh was originally just another obscure god whose pantheon role, powers and dominion developed over time like any other man-made religion? Easy. MUH HAVE FAITH, and ITZ A TRICK OF DA DEVIL!!! Just deny history and delve deeper into faith and gut feeling and voices in your head (sorry, the voice of DA LAWD). Just shut out anything and everything that proves your superstitious beliefs and Jewish religion is just bullshit that survived from the bronze age.
Christianson are basically retarded. They are essential worshipers of Jews. They don't really have a connection with any God, not their own or the Jewish one. They simply worship Jewish stories and advertising. They invest their energy and spirit into a half assed story that changes with the winds of the needs of the Jews.
Camden James
Sounds like you're actually an atheist.

Christianity is 10 times the religion that judiasm is because it is a derivative of the ancient greek philosophers.
The truly amazing thing is that judiasm is still a thing.
Honeslty the only thing most people know about the religion is that they have a wishing wall.
Like seriosulsy.
The ark of the covenant is so sacred and our god is all powerful and any nation that has it will be cursed until they return it! Ohhh and we have to not eat cheeseburgers.
So where is it?
Ohhh its been missing for 2000 years and the place of our most sacred temple the center of the universe of our all powerful god has a mosque on it.
Jews are larping europeans.

I’m agnostic, not christian, but this is a boring argument that does nothing to discredit Christianity…
> If your God existed since the dawn of time, then humanity would obviously have worshipped him the same way from the dawn of time.
Why is that necessarily true? Why wouldn’t their God reveal himself in a historical process? Where does it say that humanity’s understanding of God must remain fixed and unchanging, just because God himself presumably remains fixed and unchanging. After all, if he exists, then history is part of his creation, and could certainly be he could use history to advance our relationship with him.
Isaac Baker
>Bible claims that Yahweh revealed himself only to Israel/Jews (until Jesus' time) >Historical record shows that the concept of Yahweh as a deity was dreamed up by different people in a different place altogether, and eventually drifted over to the people that became what is known as Jews
>Bible claims that from the point of Yahweh's revelation to the Jews, he would not countenance ANY worship of other Gods and declared that all other Gods are false >Historical record shows that Yahweh was worshiped alongside other gods with no understanding that this was a problem for hundreds of years
How does this not discredit Christanity? I don't think even the most liberal Christian sects consider the Biblical assertions mentioned above to be in any way metaphorical rather than factual.

Then they asked him, “Where is your father?”
“You do not know me or my Father,” Jesus replied. “If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
John 8:19
“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”
Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
John 8:41 - 44

>lul Actually no. Christianity is retarded Jew worship. If you're a Christian you are a proto liberal and you basically worship jews. Greek philosophers are greek philosophers. They aren't christianity. If you like greek philosophers then good on you. Philosophy is interesting and valuable. Christianity is not interesting or valuable. At all.
Owen Sanders
I know very little about biblical history, I will just assume all your claims are true… but you’re still working on the premise that Christianity is built on some sort of solid historical foundation.
You’re labouring under the notion that God would necessarily manifest himself in history in a way that perfectly aligns with reason and logic, and that if he truly is god, then everything his devotees say about him must be true.
If you don’t believe in Christ, so be it, I’m not at all the one to sell you on him, but you have to realize that a person’s individual, felt connection to God is what matters about religion, and all your “ackshuallys” pointing out the obvious internal inconsistencies within that religion, are missing the point.

Americans don't need God anymore. They have niggers. American culture is centered around niggers. They have holidays for niggers. They killed hundreds of thousands of white men to free niggers. They listen to nigger music. They elect a nigger as their president. They dress and act like niggers. They draw the entirety of their modern culture from niggers. They post sassy gifs about niggers. They watch sportsball in worship of niggers. Their biggest event of the year involves throwing parties in honor of niggers playing sports. They use nigger slang like "bruh" and "thot". When you say "Martin Luther" they're not thinking of the father of protestantism. They're thinking of the nigger. Their cities are completely overrun with niggers. They worship their ZOGbot police force disproportionately filled with niggers and their global police force of soldiers filled with niggers. Their men sit around watching nigger ball while their women sit around watching nigger talk shows and fantasizing about nigger dick. They worship niggers like Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan and Michael Jackson and the late Will I Am while attacking the whites who actually built their country before niggers took over. Their movies are filled with niggers and their music charts are topped by niggers. They send niggers to the Olympics and celebrate when the niggers win because those niggers are true red blooded american niggers. They watch nigger porn to a point where "BBC" does not make them think of an international media company but about nigger penises instead. They will tell you how much they hate niggers and how the mutt's law meme is a stale joke and they are just pretending to love niggers but the evidence speaks for itself in that America has always been and will be a nation of nigger loving niggers.

>mfw studying Biblical history is what truly discredited Abrahamic religions for me like it's right there in the historical and archaeological record, YHWH was not the universal, all-powerful being Christians worship him as until recently. It is humans that changed his identity. Why would the greatest power in the universe have such a non-static identity? How can you ignore the evidence that YHWH used to be one of many tribal Semitic gods? It takes massive amounts of cognitive dissonance to not accept the historical evolution of YHWH.

They worship baby murderers. Logic isnt their strong point.

The Bible talks about all of this. God admonishes the Israelites for worshipping asherah and baal. God reveals his name as Yahweh, not just El which is more of a title than a personal name.
Lucas Bennett
This is actually a pretty good book on the subject. I used to have this, but I don’t know where I have it now
Primitive people couldn’t understand God’s true nature by themselves because they were all tainted by original sin, which clouded their perceptions, before Christ died for them. It doesn’t matter how people perceived God thousands of years ago because He has revealed himself since then. It’s the whole point of the Bible.
