It was very big at the time. 55 people died, and the general sense of chaos helped Bill Clinton pull ahead of George Bush, Sr. in the presidential race held later that year. A lot of people thought that blacks were acting like savages, but the media supported them, and over the longer-term, American society became way more touchy about 'race,' with whites taking almost all of the blame.
It actually shows the importance of controlling the media, because then you can control the long-term 'narrative' which comes out of an event. Instead of 'violent blacks going nuts,' the story was somehow turned into 'evil whites persecute blacks until society explodes.'

Towards the end it became so bad they initiated marshal law and the national guard would patrol the streets with a sundown to sunrise curfew. Actually, during the riots, the blacks considered Hispanics and Koreans the same as whites. So all non blacks understood that they were equally under threat from angry blacks. Despite the stringent gun laws, average non black people who had to work were packing loaded firearms on their person during their commutes -- ESPECIALLY if they had to drive through black areas. Quickest way to get normies to love guns is a good old fashioned race riots.
