The only reason pork was ever banned was because back in the day in the middle east, many people only had wooden utensils which they would only wash once a week and pork festers faster than other meats.

I like how religion put guidelines down to protect people. Pigs were always filthy animals, but back then they didn't know how to cure or prepare it safely. Religion thus told everyone to stay away from it.
Another instance I remember is the footwashing. People worked on the land before prayer started, this was so people would wash themselves more often and get the dust off.
