I especially don’t get why young people are losing their shit. Immunologically speaking humans are at the top of the food chain for obvious reasons, we domesticated and hunted all kinds of animals, we live in rather large populations, trade and travel a lot and are next to everywhere. Surely our ancestors almost caught everything out there. Except the innate immune system of bats there is nothing better in all mammals and even than there is evidence our adaptive immune system is better at clearing infections. And even within vertebrates it’s pretty much at the top except for maybe crocodiles. If you are below 35 you do have a very decent shot at even surviving even the worst viral hemorrhagic fevers. In some strains of Ebola and Lassa next to all healthy people below 35 make it. It’s a very bad experience, but we can take a lot, of we absolutely have to. There is reason for farmers and zoos to put up signs about how people shouldn’t come to close to the animals, because chances are human pathogens they catch are going to be bad news.

Those "may" cause parts is due to how this is playing out. Some of the folks popping into care are there for the first time, or in ICU where the doctors may not have access to their files, etc (not saying always, but it does happen when stress is at play). You also have a lot of unknowns. Theres been growing concern that ventilators are causing the damage. Also, if ventilators are causing the damage, you need to also consider the effects of oxygen deprivation on the brain and so on. So if you see doctors talking about it, its likely them sharing information to see if it was a one of case or something more. If you see news outlets talking about it, its them going "omg, fear porn and clicks! RUN IT!!!" and should be ignored.
