I know that my point is China is betting on the use of their phony islands in the south China Sea to keep American navy and aircraft carriers out of reach of the mainland while fighting back via Chinese forces from mainland.

China has a big military but poor mobility. Their battle plan is to do what they historically have done, toss in a few hundred thousand foot soldiers into combat and hope they win. Their strategy is about 100 years old.
