I never though about this but why does it look like autism plagues boys more than girls? We know autism decreases social skills but it also increases capability to specialize and become very good at one thing, like a savant. Is it just that girls already have social skills imprinted in their genes so the effect of autism isn’t noticeable, or is it that boys simply have higher % autist for some genetic reason?

Only females on the extreme end of the spectrum get noticed at all, while high functioning cases aren't noticed because women can get by in life even if they are socially retarded. The research used to say that women with ASD had lower IQ than boys. But that's only because females are more able to "mask" their symptoms and just tend to be more social.
One commenters asked to define social skills, and give examples. But its things like joint attention (do they look where you look), social emotional reciprocity (smile when you smile at them, ask you about your interests), etc.
I like Simon Baron Cohen's work on systematizing and sensitizing minds.
One commenters also posted about genetics. Boys have one X chromosome, and girls have two. If something is fucked on a males X, the other cannot make up for it.
