I think they were using him to get nano biologics into vaccines.
This guy speculates Corona-Chan was a working vaccine against HIV, whether failed or research/testing. He worked with the Chinese, so he'd likely know their overt intentions.
I think it was more of a gain-of-function research on BAT-SARS, to see how they could get various ones to infect humans and other animals when they normally couldn't. Just like they were doing already. And one escaped a lab.
I don't think it'll disappear like he says due to being unnatural, as I think they manipulated its tail to provide unnatural stability.
