I've known a few people who became nurses and it was never their first career option. When we were in high school, the girls either wanted to do something involving hair/make-up/fashion and the more motivated ones wanted to become either vets or marine biologists. I don't know what it is about veterinary medicine and marine biology that attracts so women, but all I know is that none of them ever actually become vets or marine biologists.
