Given this, it's very interesting why companies are dumping literal billions in this wireless communication technology that gets blocked by fucking air molecules.

People who have no memories of the 20th century often don't remember just how dangerous Electricity was, and how much safer things are now. Electricity caused mountains of deaths before the common integration of digital circuits that could detect line breaks and shut shit off, and many other safety features and principles.

This was also in 1889, when safety was on people's minds due to the War of the Currents between AC and DC implementation, and many cities had outlawed the use of overhead power transmission, restricting it to underground lines.

One notable city that went with the overhead solution was New York, which I am assuming this cartoon is referring to. 6000 volt wires crisscrossed everywhere with basically worthless insulation that would come off easily. In 1888, a year before this, there was a massive spring snowstorm in New York that tore down/degraded most of the wires and caused a swathe of outages, fires, deaths because most lines were maintained by companies that went outta business and left them to rot and thus degrade to a dangerous state.

NYC moved to try and outlaw overhead lines, but a few companies, one of which was well-funded tied the legislation up in courts for YEARS. In the meanwhile, a number of deaths occurred due to powerline failures and things like degraded telegraph lines brushing against main voltage lines, causing things like an incident of LIGHTNING ARCING BETWEEN WIRES AND PEOPLE IN HUGE CHAINS.

I know people want to use this to indicate some sort of anti-tech stance, but literally this was about deadly current events that were INCREDIBLY real to the people experiencing it.

These complaints and fears are the very reason why we have safe electricity nowadays. Those people frightened of getting killed by overhead powerlines created the discussion necessary to MAKE the changes that make electricity a safe utility that's expected to be everywhere these days.
