I used to teach both ways the new way in the pic as an introductory lesson and the old way as the way they would use after all the time.
The lengthy way is good for the introductory lesson so they can visualize the numbers a bit but after that you need the old way.
Telling you to half the second add it to the first then take the second half and add it to the result. Literally baby step addition for smaller numbers. Still adding just more steps.
I think it was designed to be a failure.

Way quicker and easier to do basic arithmatic in your head that way, i do this without ever explicitly learning it.
