It was partly a response to medium-range nukes pointed at the Soviets parked in Turkey. Turkey was a Cold War ally and was still used for our airbases there in both gulf wars.

Lol no. There are only two prototypes in existence, our army is still using obsolete M-84's.
Full scale production was supposed to start in 1995 which is why it was called the M-95. Now, 25 years later, there are still only two prototypes in existence. Even if it did enter mass production now, the design is already obsolete at this point. Whenever any hint of progress appears, it is immediately followed by a scandal where all the money invested somehow disappeared, or the politicians simply change their minds when they realize how expensive it is.
Nothing ever gets done in this shithole. We'll be driving M84's and flying Mig-21's until they rust away into nothing, and then our army will be throwing shoes at the enemy.

To be fair, the T-72 with all the upgrades can still be pretty formidable, but most former Eastern bloc armies still use the original version, which is awfully outdated.
We'll probably scrap our T-72s after the Leo 2s arrive, which is kind of a shame, since the chassis is still usable. Converting them to TOS-1s would be epic.
