It just struck me how bizarre it is for a leader to ask their entire nation to use his name on a daily basis whenever greeting one another.
Obviously, there are clear lies and distortions to this phrase because the original saying was "Sieg Heil" which means "Victory Salvation" in German but where did this pompous version where people are asked to salute a politician's name originate from? How often was it used if it was real and if it's a just something made up and exaggerated to make Hitler seem more of a control freak, where did it start?

Heil was used because it means „healing“. Germany was fucked after 1918 and Hitler brought healing to Germany. Thats why they were shouting „Heil!“. Sieg Heil was used during the war. There are also similar sayings in german that are still used today like „Pertry Heil“ (used when wishing someone good look at fishing) and „Weidmanns Heil“ (same as Petry Heil just for hunting in the forest). Heil Hitler was used when you wanted to praise him. Most people didn’t use it as a greeting.
