Putin threw out the jewish oligarchs that worked for the west to destabilize and coopt the ruling class and balkanize it to be the vassal state like whole west is for the US. So, sanctions and rest of the demonization campaigns came with it. Also Russia being boogyman serves the interests of military industrial complex who rely on the government to buy the new toys. Sadly legalized systematic corruption in the US has no bounders, and it's legal, which is weird af when you consider the consequences of it.
