Roman/Greek republics are not even close to what the modern idea of democracy is. Most people were not citizens (no voting rights) and most politicians were aristocratic elites.
Rome itself even had a special political tool to avert crisis (dictators) because they understood that there are times when democratic squabbling is counterproductive.

Indeed. The founding fathers erred when they assumed everyone had the same capacity to understand (or have the want to) participate in politics. They assumed everyone (this was also a way they thought would combat the political corruption that always befalls any government) would be invested in it like themselves thus they gave every man the right to vote. Sadly this model has become very unstable (especially with the addition on female/non-white voters), and probably will collapse at some point in the next 100 years.

Seems to be more of a problem with a certain (((infected))) country using its influence to ruin its competitor. And also letting women vote lol

Its the same reason people support monarchy. They think they will be part of the priveleged class and not part of the oppressed. Even though they will have no say in this other than sucking up to those in power and hoping they let you have nice things.
In reality, it just leads to unnecessary conflict. Republicanism, and voting in general, allows you to approximate the strength of each side and decide who would win, without having to actual suffer the damages of a real battle. Its better for society than being a 3rd world shithole with constant civil wars and coups.
