No. Nobody is "testing them retroactively", whatever that even means. If you go to a doctor right now and you have coronavirus, you can't get a test, most likely. Almost nobody can get a test unless they're rich or work in essential services. So the doctor examines you and if you fit a certain set of diagnostic criteria you become a "presumptive case". As of right now, as far as I understand it, presumptive cases are not counted as deaths in most of the country. The change you're talking about was in New York city alone, where they decided to include the presumptive cases in with the total death toll. Which only makes sense. There are many more deaths too from people who don't even go to the doctor and just end up dropping dead from this thing. Or people dying because the hospitals are jammed and they can't get medical care for other, very serious, emergencies
I'm sure there are unreported cases of COVID-19 but generally with a more severe disease you'd expect to see less asymptomatic cases. I mean, you probably come in contact with the flu virus at some point every year and don't even get sick. Flu is endemic to the world already and flu is everywhere. So it's apples and oranges. There's almost no question on Earth that there are orders of magnitude more asymptomatic and unreported flu cases. Plus, as mentioned before, all of the heightened testing, and heightened demand for tests, mixed with testing shortages in other areas (as described above) so that so many people who are VERY sick with COVID-19 can't even get confirmed as having it. There are also a lot of cases of people being told they DONT have COVID-19 and then dying and all their family members get COVID-19. Or they get tested on their death bed and the family only finds out after they're dead that they had it. So basically it all means there's a shitload more COVID-19 and COVID-19 deaths out there than we're being officially told

From 2018 - 2019 in the US, 35.5 million people got infected with influenza and 34,200 of those infected died. Coronavirus has infected over 675,000 Americans and has killed 34,500 of those infected. Coronavirus clearly has a higher mortality rating than Influenza if it only took 34,500 people to die within a span of 3 months as apposed to 34,200 within a span of a whole year.

When we're determining the trajectory of a disease's spread, do we look at raw, cumulative case numbers, or do we see how the spread is accelerating/decelerating?

It's just objectively true, however they that they died as a result of the outbreak because they're losing access to medical care. But they aren't counted in official death tolls as "COVID deaths" or whatever. Well, prove that it is. Right now, almost all of the testing is done on people who already have severe symptoms and the immediate family of those that do. The number of un-tested Covid-19 cases could be ten or a hundred times higher than tested cases.

Not a good comparison. The flu CFR is arrived at by testing a sample of the general population and then estimating the total number of flu cases in the whole country based on that, while the Covid CFR is based on a pool of people who presented enough symptoms to warrant testing. It does not take into account all of the people who have coronavirus but are either asymptomatic, or did not bother going to the hospital because they are under 80 years old. In places such as Iceland where they tested a random sample of the general population, they found that the Coronavirus CFR is similar to the flu. So basically you’re a retarded and an NPC.
