they look the way they do because they are constructed with one or two floor plans, so materials and design become much simpler. they are Mass Production Housing, not the individual constructions of earlier generations.
the advantages:

I live in a neighborhood like that except every house is based on 1 of 5 different models. There's no crime, no black people, no trashy people besides me. The worst part about it is the low fence lines and relatively small backyards. The developer just packed way too many houses in a ~10 acre plot of land.
