Dictatorships are unstable, which was a huge problem with the Roman Empire. While the Republic was stable until the end, the Empire experienced constant civil wars, assassinations, purges, etc.

Republics are just wombs where Empires grow. Which isn't necessarily a good thing.
The problems with Republics is that once corruption becomes normal the system becomes broken and the Republic becomes an Oglirarchy and after that it thends to end in a Dictatorship, dictatorships tend to have problems with succesion, either the intended heirs are assasinated or coups and revolts happen.
The Roman Empire was fucking weird, the senate sometimes appointed the Emperors and the Emperors themselves liked to mantain the idea that the Republic still existed.
