The US GDP for 2019 was 21.428 Trillion dollars or roughly 5.35 Trillion per quarter. The entire federal budget in 2019 with in terms of total expenditure was 4.407 trillion dollars with a 984 billion dollar deficit. The GDP of the country is roughly four times what the US Government spends in a year, and it is an even greater amount if you rely purely on just tax revenue coming in. That can give you an idea of how much it would cost if a % of “non-essential business” were completely supported by the government as a way to keep folks locked down.
That can only theoretically happen by raising taxes (good luck getting that passed, even the high rates of yesteryear that all the lefties clamor for on high earners had so many exemptions and loopholes that the effective tax rate was far less than what was on paper)or massive currency debasement (breakout the toilet paper and prepare for it to actually be currency).
In plain English, the federal government cannot artificially sustain the economy forever, there must some genuine economic flowing through the economy. Claiming folks who want to open up the economy as “science deniers” is a straw man, given how off the models have been in terms of death projections. Lockdowns rooted in bad models are causing COVID “related” deaths in the form of overdose, suicide, heart attack, etc.
Folks reply: “You can still buy food, and essential services and that can support our economy” don’t understand diminishing returns. By artificially determining what is essential and non-essential, the lack of revenue will start bleeding into the “essential services” where they even feel the pain of the lockdown.
