That's only true in a normal economy. When all these businesses shut down at once and will have to re-open, there'll be millions of jobs to return to, including the jobs people were laid off from. You basically just wait and then go back to work when it opens again.

What people aren't getting is it isn't just some on / off light switch. These jobs, businesses, and customers were an elaborate interdependent ecosystem. People who get laid off cancel all their unnecessary contracts and services. This means many other businesses will lose customers and revenue. That means many other businesses will lay other workers off. That in turn makes even more unemployed people who will become multiple lost customers each for many more businesses.
And everyone being aware of how bad things are with layoffs and the economy will get spooked into (rationally) cutting back on spending in general.
