Although the mortality rate in the US is lower than say the UK, France, and Italy, it stands at 4.4% of those infected. If we let Covid-19 "wash over" the nation all at once the health care system WILL be overwhelmed and the mortality rate will rise to be more in line with the rates in Italy and Spain. AND that would mean 70% of the 330 million citizens being infected before we achieve "herd immunity" and the spread stops. Do the math. 70% of 330 million people is 231 million infections, with 12% of those dying from the disease that comes to 27,720,000 people almost 28 million dead. That's 8% of the US population. This means almost 1 out of every 10 people you know will die. And honestly, with that kind of death occurring, government lockdowns wont matter. People will quit their jobs and go on unemployment to keep from getting affected. The economic impact would be far worse than just asking people to stay home.
