It's a very grimy business. You find out about a lot of things that you know you can't just go and publish an article or TV segment about (I've worked in both print and TV). You're not usually told explicitly "don't report on this" but part of keeping your job is knowing there are lines you don't cross.

You can weaken their grip by offering a better alternative. Trump has done a good job of combating MSM, but he lies too often and too much while having an obvious personal stake in discrediting them. You can't champion any sort of truth while praising twitter.

One potential thing to do is fight fire with fire. Use the same techniques the media uses to steer conversation.
Use this example against them.

Often times the media will change the terms they use to adjust people's overall perception of a topic.
Ex. Global warming -> climate change

Likewise the media will use words that carry a stigma to destroy a rational argument
Ex. Conspiracy theorist
We can do similar by claiming media arguments are conspiracy theories or something similar
