This. No one who commits a crime assumes they will get caught and thus face the consequence. The consequence of murder in many places in the US is being killed in turn, yet that doesn't actually stop people from doing it. IMO they should *use* criminals. So if you get life in prison, congrats, you just became a lab rat. Test new medicines, drug treatments, ext on them.

Back in the old day stealing was a big crime because people were basically living in poverty, and if you stole a person's cow... That's like stealing 20%+ of his livelyhood. Stealing was a big deal back in the pre-industrial days, imagine having no banks and everyone storing their valuables at home.

Working would provide them discipline, give them fresh air and exercise and keep them out of a cage while also giving them job training. Putting them on prisons just makes them crazy and become hardened criminals.
