Honestly, I think his issue has always been that while he has good principles and is very intelligent, he's also very mentally unstable and suffers from delusions. Because of that, people either attack him for being unstable and doing crazy things, or they try to excuse his failings even when they're obvious.
Really, the proper approach is to treat his material like panning for gold - there is great value there, but you have to get through all the dirt.
