The most basic answer is simply that Bill Gates stepped outside his proper position. He had no business talking about coronavirus, and even the normals know it intuitively. It's similar in principle to why Trump still makes people spurg; the perception is that POTUS shouldn't have opinions, because that is not part of his position.
