well, the alternative to "Gnosticism", which means everything but orthdoxical, is the orthodox. The orthodox shows itself to be hardly christian at most times, and in all times, a petty control mechanism for contemporary needs; pick and choose scripture, changing doctrines that mean so much at the time but change in the eyes of the supposed timeless. Gnosticism, on the other hand, is so open, it's the only actual USEFUL religious/spiritual experience because its a personal one made with the individual and the idea of deity. The others are more useful social mechanisms, as orthodoxical religious behavior is often communal.

Then, there is the small "church" or cult aspect that makes Gnostic community fun. A small group of people discussing like philosophical ideas using a almost similar perceptual foundation to the construct of the world they make in bonding argument and labels.

The last is the most fun because it creates small ground friendships, or really keeps the 'study' of what ever philosophy they have going on focused.
