You could say the same to defend the media minimizing it. He minimized it equally, as did the WHO (because they're a Chinese shill group), Fauci, and the entire MSM.
Anyway, because of Trump minimizing it early on, it's made this weird situation where loads of his fans think it's no big deal, but they also are now talking about how the media 'minimized the pandemic!'.
There's a huge level of mental gymnastics going on with it all to the point of ridiculousness.
A lot of people who like Trump want to get everyone back to work and think the virus is a nothingburger.
These same people also call out the WHO and China for downplaying it.
How does any of this line of thought make sense? If the WHO and China downplayed it then that means they should be taking it more seriously by their own logic.

Not really. Wanting China and the WHO to be more upfront EARLY about the risks of it so that earlier precautions could have been in place are not mutually exclusive with also wanting to get the economy back going, especially in areas where there is minimal impact.
