Time for another history lesson. Today, instead of 1703, let's look back to 2003. The Internet was a very different place back then. Vestiges of the early days of computers still remained and many of us who had been there all along still thought of the Internet as a place that was wild and free. We had grown up in the era of books, television, and movies- and though you could read a book or watch an R-rated movie on nearly any subject- some subjects were still taboo- and the Internet was the only place was pure and untouched by the censors. "Hate speech" and call-out culture was still in its infancy. At that time and in the decade beforehand the Internet was much more decentralized and individuality and freedom of thought reigned supreme. There was information available online that couldn't be found anywhere else- it was the world's greatest library, full of obscure books and forbidden topics. You could read about Hitler, discuss politics with a larger reach than ever before, and even tightly guarded government secrets were suddenly at your fingertips.
Yas Forums was a young thing then. I have to admit that I wasn't there at the very beginning. I grew up on a different set of forums and Yas Forums at that time still had some defenses and methods for keeping new people from wandering in. Also, I didn't want to be there- the people who inhabited these boards, at the time, were mean and the website had a reputation for being dangerous. Moreover, I had no reason to be here because at that time you didn't get banned very easily from most websites for simply speaking your mind. Internet culture was antithetical to that back then.
Reminder that the shills are sending out their new blood in an attempt to break them in while coming up with new talking points since today's presser trashed what they had. One last thread didn't even know that Yas Forums has post IDs. Prepare for some very low quality leftist shilling.

Though I had a peek in 2005, I didn't join in on the fun until sometime later- quite accidentally- while scouring the Internet for funny pictures of cats. Cat threads were very common back then, but the real magic was that you could find threads on ANY topic- even subjects that would get you banned from anywhere else- even dark things like animal torture and child porn. Back then, the word was that law enforcement didn't care so much about consumers of such content- instead they focused on catching the producers of illegal film and photography- and the actual pedophiles who were here looking to have sex with minors.
In a word, it was dirty but also exhilarating to be so anonymous and so free. You could discuss literally anything. I admit that I was there then and that I'm still here now. Back then, I never put much thought into WHO might be discussing these topics with us and I knew that since it was a public forum that law enforcement must be aware of it. They must have known about everything that was happening here- and if they aren't doing anything about it- then they must be okay with it. It was an era of innocence and naivety. The stage was already set for what came after and what has now become the rule of the day- blackmail.
I'm perpetually depressed but I don't try to force it on others. I don't understand the mindset of wanting everyone around you to be negative. Positive energy is the only brightness in my life.
